MUSEUMS IN POZNAŃ on plan

Podziemia Katedry Poznańskiej (Poznań Cathedral's cellars)

Description

Poznań Cathedral's cellars are the site of fragments of the pre-Romanesque and Romanesque cathedrals, as well as the remnants of tombs which most likely held the remains of Poland's first rulers, Mieszko I and King Bolesław the Brave. Also to be seen are relics of the first baptismal pool dating back to the 10th century, which may well have been used to baptise Poland's first ruler and his subjects.

Another crypt houses an exhibition of various tombstones and other stone artefacts discovered locally in archaeological excavations during the post-World-War-II reconstruction of the cathedral between 1946 and 1956. The mortal remains of Poznań's archbishops have been laid to rest in yet another crypt. A brief summary of the history of the Cathedral and Cathedral Island by Prof. Zofia Kurnatowska can be found on panels at cellar entrance. The cellars are closed during winter.
