Description
The National Museum of Poznań ranks among Poland's oldest, biggest and most significant museums. Its large and highly diverse collections span over centuries of heritage and numerous generations from antiquity to contemporary times. The building of the National Museum dates back to the early 20th century.
It holds magnificent collections of Polish art from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, including Polish-baroque casket portraits and works of art by masters from later periods, including Jacek Malczewski, Stanisław Wyspiański, Jan Matejko; works of Western-European art, and, in particular, works by Quentin Massys and Joos van Cleve, Flemish and Dutch paintings by Jan van Goyen, Salomon Ruysdael and Willem Claesz Heda, Italian paintings by Sofonisba Anguissola, Bronzino, Bellini, Strozzi, and early-19th-century German works, including those by Arnold Böcklin and Johann Overbeck. The museum also houses Poland's only collection of Spanish paintings, among them masterpieces by Zurbarán, Ribera and Velazquez.
