MUSEUMS IN POZNAŃ on plan

Muzeum Martyrologi Wielkopolan - Fort VII (Wielkopolska Martyrs Museum - Fort VII)

Description

In the autumn of 1939, the Nazis used the site now occupied by the museum to set up their first concentration camp in occupied Poland. It was here that gas was first used to commit mass murder. Visitors will see the remains of what the Germans referred to as "the camp of bloody revenge".

The camp's first victims were members of Wielkopolska's intelligentsia, seen as likely instigators of future rebellions, and Wielkopolska and Silesian insurgents, viewed as traitors of the German state. Other prisoners included resistance fighters involved in a local movement. Fort VII is the best-preserved part of the outer ring of the former Prussian fortifications.
